Custom-designed and handmade in Italy, Cutler and Gross SS18 combines the finest acetates and metals with an array of bespoke lenses to create sunglasses for everyone

words Marilena Roncarà

Considered bastions of iconic eyewear, optical frames and sunglasses designed by the brand have been worn by some of the most recognizable faces of the last four decades: from the legendary David Hockney to Grace Jones, Sir Elton John and Madonna, as well as Rihanna, Alicia Keys and Erykah Badu to Kate Moss and Manolo Blahnik.

Eyewear pioneers Cutler and Gross introduce their latest range with a selection of high quality Rx-able sunglasses. The 1301 is a new addition to the hooded series, where it joins the 1277 and is created accordingly with a specially laminated and milled acetate rim that is inserted into an etched rimwire. Cutler and Gross are dedicated to creating glasses that are both striking and versatile, with the 1301, available in 7 different colours, being no exception. The smart metal and acetate combination makes the frame incredibly lightweight for the wearer, whilst the colour mix of violet and orange gives maximum style impact. Each pair is fitted with the finest Italian mirrored lenses, with 100% UV400 protection and colour enhancement technology to offer supreme visual comfort.

All the frames are made by hand in the eponymous factory in Cadore, Italy, where a tailored 42 step process is applied by expert frame makers, that takes five weeks to complete. The frames are then delivered to the London headquarters, to be carefully distributed to their own shops in the United Kingdom and to selected department and concept stores, along with optical stores in major cities across Europe, North and South America and Asia.
