Alf – When simple means elegant

Timeless design, attention to detail and a great selection of materials: Alf is a young brand with a bright future ahead

words Enrico S. Benincasa

At the beginning of 2018, Germain and Alexis Bouchara decided to join forces to start a new venture in the eyewear field. The two French brothers brought their expertise to this project: Alexis was already working in the world of optics, developing and shaping custom eyeglass frames, whereas Germain had already had significant experience as a manager in various international companies. They called their brand Alf and chose Paris as their headquarter. France is an important part of Alf’ DNA: the design centre is in the capital and production is based in Normandy.
As far as craftsmanship is concerned, they pay lot of attention to choosing the right materials for their frames: they opted for Japanese acetate and anti-reflective mineral lenses (photochromic) for the sun models. This approach is the same for the other aspects of the eyewear experience, such as the case and the cord which are both in real leather.

Alf takes a lot of inspiration from iconic styles from the 20s through to the 60s, with particular focus on the sober and minimalistic. A great example of this is model a20.01, which brings up to date a classic American shape for ‘safety glasses’, now offered with thickened lines and a profile in mid ring for a singular result. Model a20.04, on the other hand, is a sort of hybrid frame that mixes the pilot style and glacier glasses, but the unconventional use of acetate gives this silhouette an unexpected and elegant twist. The strong personality of the brand is markedly present in the lines and shapes of their models; however, to make their items more recognizable Alf places a red thread woven by hand into every pair of glasses. A unique trademark for very special eyewear.
