The colour of freedom

For its twentieth anniversary, the only French eyewear company in the Haute France region is celebrating its past in Silmo... But also its future

Colour is definitely the keyword of all the collections and has been from the beginning in 2003, when Dominique Varlet, a trained optician, together with his wife Jenny decided to create Variation Design. "My idea was to introduce colour between the dark lines of the time and reveal new shapes by working on the decoration of the temples, thus allowing everyone to establish themselves thanks to their frame, while always remaining accessible to the general public", says Dominique Varlet, describing how he started out. And the goal he set for himself has definitely been achieved.

After 20 years, Variation Design is celebrating its success in Silmo - the perfect location for a French brand that is the only eyewear company located in the Upper France region, specifically in Beaurains. Supported by a close-knit team, Dominique Varlet now reaches any target transversally with his collections: from children to adolescents, from adults to older people. It is a style that is also appreciated for its freshness and lightness combined with a touch of audacity. Only aerial optical frames, intertwining volutes, thin overlapping lines. Under the banner of absolute creativity, Dominique Varlet creates the collections using designers from various design schools with whom he has established a relationship based on absolute freedom and collaboration, as he wants to clarify, "What makes the difference is the freedom I leave to my team and the mutual trust between us. This allows everyone to continue to keep developing their personal and professional skills." There are three main collections: V.Design which includes both male and female frames, V.Design Teens dedicated exclusively to adolescents from 10 to 15 years old, and V.DesignKid's for children from 5 to 9 years old...

Collections created specifically to accompany people throughout their lives, naturally managing to meet all their visual needs, not only related to age but also to various daily situations. Because, as previously mentioned, Dominique Varlet is a trained optician, in addition to aesthetics he has always paid a lot of attention to comfort and fit, making sure that the frames are suitable for any visual correction, for any lens. Skills and technical knowledge that definitely make the difference when wearing prescription glasses. By modulating the thicknesses, transforming the temples into spikes as in the Epis model - a 2016 bestseller, or designing for example the lines in the shape of orchid petals as in Orchis - a 2017 bestseller to be re-proposed this year in a special box to celebrate the 20th anniversary. V.Design has also introduced an evident poetic component in its models, made possible by solid know-how. Among the most frequently used materials for the vintage-inspired men's and women's collections, are acetate and thin metal, often laser-cut and revived by coloured enamel interventions, sometimes even fluorescent for an extremely contemporary pop effect. But other materials such as carbon, wood and aluminium are also used sporadically.

For children, the frames with simple but never mundane shapes are made only of acetate enlivened by very bright colours and colourful textures. And what about teenagers who are definitely the most difficult target ever? Indeed, tackling that age range with a specific collection, experimenting with new codes and languages in search of the definition of their own style and identity, was really brave of Dominique Varlet and his team who, however, were able to interpret with sensitivity and empathy even the unexpressed desires of a particularly demanding and fickle clientèle. With the aim of proposing new and original collections that manage to surprise and be innovative without ever overlooking quality, Dominique Varlet continues his activity with the same passion, enthusiasm and ambition with which he began this adventure. But Variation Design is also a multifaceted company open to new collaborations and is currently the agent and distributor for other eyewear brands. Daring to enhance one's personality is, in short, the Dominique Varlet proposal, seeking to emphasise once again the importance of being able to create collections that are always accessible to everyone. A commitment and not just a promise.
