Mathilde is a lyrical goth performer, and Paul is a DJ and producer. Together, they form Ascendant Vierge, a transnational and trans-musical duo currently revolutionizing electronic music
Your debut album, ‘Une Nouvelle Chance’ has been hailed as an iconic album for the new generation of rave. How do you feel your music challenges or breaks away from conventional genre norms, and what inspired this daring approach?
Paul: I think Mathilde’s characteristic voice is for something in what makes our music different, because it takes space, and the encounter with (hard) club music is already something because the singer is not so often treated as the main element.
Mathilde: On the other side of the spectrum standard pop music is still quite shy in exploring harder sounds and faster BPMs... But we never tried to ‘be different’ or ‘stand out’ with a recipe. We feel like we do like many others before us. Staying true to both of our personalities and influences. Bringing unexplored elements in pop music, but in the same way that rock/disco/ reggae and many other genres had been included in the pop continuum.
‘Une Nouvelle Chance’ has a diverse mix of influences, including trance-pop and big beat. Can you share some specific inspirations that contributed to the creation of this album?
M: We have had diverse influences and momentum of inspiration on 'Une Nouvelle Chance', from pop music to reggae, to dub: from Grace Jones to Tones on Tail to Madonna to Calvin Harris...
P: one genre that brings us together and that is not often mentioned is new-wave (there are actually 2 samples of 80s new-wave in the album). We love the rough synth arpeggios, pig pads, sad voices, romance and melancholy you can find in this music.
Your track ‘Influenceur’ became a massive hit with millions of streams. Did you anticipate such a widespread response, and how has it influenced the direction of your subsequent projects?
P: ‘Influenceur’ is the first track we ever dropped. We didn’t expect such a massive impact at all but it got out of hand and comforted us in believing in our music and the project.
M: We both believed that something was on its way when we played "Influencer" for the first time to some of our friends: we are so proud of our first baby. By the way, we had a very strong vision when we started our collaboration: everything or nothing!
The campaign for your album launch included various creative elements. How do these unconventional strategies contribute to building anticipation for the LP release?
P: We are not super comfortable with our own image, and in a weird way it felt more sincere to invent some characters and funny situations.
M: We had this weird relationship with social media. We needed to get back to it to announce the release of our upcoming album, so we decided to jump on it and create a kind of treasure hunt by creating a lot of content where people would find some clues that were revealing some stuff from the album. We had a lot of
fun creating a big number of false leads, crazy deepfakes, bad dreams, ads for fake game apps...
Your international tour has taken you to various countries and festivals. How has the global exposure impacted your music and the way you connect with audiences worldwide?
M: Ascendant Vierge is half a band based in france and Belgium: our first EP was released by the German label ‘Live from Earth’. We are actually a European band. Touring in those countries is something we have to do, to meet our public. Those 58 gigs all around Europe have been very rich in terms of emotion, work and encounters. We were very lucky everywhere we went: we met wild crowds!
Your distinctive aesthetic often includes eyewear reminiscent of 90s rave culture. Can you share the significance behind the eyewear choices you make? Do you have a favorite pair that holds a special meaning or memory?
M: It’s easier to go on stage with sunglasses to be honest. When you start, it kind of helps to focus and to not show that you can look stressed or whatever. our light engineer is also a punk and loves to put some extreme lightnings and strobes. At that moment your sunglasses can be your best friend!
P: We love our Oakley, Meller or Ottolinger Eyewear. The best memory was when a fan stole a pair from us at the end of the show, and brought them back to the hotel where we were staying, at 7am the morning after, right before we left. She had a full night partying with our glasses and gave them back when the sun was rising!
