A winning bet: Mehdi Gaurat and Vanessa Di Giovanni tell us how they reached the haute couture through the 3D print personalization

How did you reach the concept of ‘haute couture’ through the 3D print personalization?
Our primary goal launching VM L’Atelier was to use 3D printing technology so that we would no longer be limited by our imagination. Even when we’re very creative and resourceful, those qualities aren’t always compatible with traditional eyewear manufacturing. By expanding our design freedom we’ve set ourselves apart and been able to showcase our vision through our collection. We immediately realized that we were creating 3D haute couture in eyewear. Customization is what sets us apart and defines our identity. Our components are instantly recognizable. We started as eyewear designers specializing in facial features and developed a laboratory based on morphological facial analysis, taking us into unexplored stylistic territories. As a 3D modeler, I have the freedom to shape each object like a sculptor with his tools.

Which are the main points of strength of your brand?
Our opticians describe it better than we do. They feel that VM L’Atelier is an easy work product, ultra- lightweight, fun and colourful. One that allows customers to express their creativity with even the most unusual requests in terms of design and colour. Our independent designer opticians include VM L’Atelier as an additional line to designer brands featuring wood, acetate or titanium, offering consumers a wide selection while maintaining meticulous craftsmanship and refined finishes.

What are the main challenges you have had to face over the years?
Our main challenge was to grow in a market that initially had a rather negative perception of 3D-printed eyewear, mainly because of the finishing quality of the first collections and the limited, rather sad colours available at the time. The delicate balance between the passionate, tireless work of our teams and the innovations and technical advances of our manufacturing partners has gradually helped raise awareness of our eyewear. Our optical partners have supported and encouraged us in our constant pursuit of improvement, allowing us to grow together and build our reputation beyond our borders.

What are the main novelties?
We are constantly exploring new 3D printing technologies, both in terms of materials and colour pigments. The Liquid line has been expanded with new shapes and translucent colours, while the Soft nylon collection introduces more glamorous and graphic designs, together with a new concept featuring a biomimetic sculpted bridge designed to combine distinctive style with unmatched comfort.
