You Mawo
A brave outlook

Ten years ago, the brand’s journey began with eyewear merging technology and personality to turn a commodity into a piece of identity, supported by additive manufacturing
What does it take to embark on a new venture? Certainly, a great deal of courage, along with the tenacity to move forward with conviction and consistency along a path that is both new and far from easy. Courage was certainly not lacking for Daniel Miko and Sebastian Zenetti when in 2016 they launched their first You Mawo eyewear collection at Opti. It was an exploratory and measured debut, with a pared-back trade-fair stand and just six models offered in five different colours. By the second day, everything had already sold out, thanks to the enthusiasm of visionary independent opticians from Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
Encounters are never entirely by chance, and from 2017 to 2019 the two founders focussed their efforts on building the brand’s foundations and identity through a strong sales team, beginning with Germany, Austria and Switzerland. In 2018 came the launch of the Air Collection, a reinterpretation of the bestsellers from the Classic Collection, focussed on the extreme lightness and thinness of the frames. This was a genuine challenge, and one that was successfully met.
Anyone expecting You Mawo to continue along the less is more line in 2019 would have been mistaken. An unexpected shift followed: the German brand changed course decisively, turning towards the exaggerated forms of the Bold Collection. The iconic and forward-looking Metamorphosis 1 and 2 masks, defined by bold organic architectures, date from that year. Everything, however, follows a clear logic: the exploration of material and identity also unfolds through opposites, through emphatic, personality-driven forms that remain remarkably lightweight. The name itself, You Mawo, an acronym for yoUr MAgic World, encapsulates the promise of ongoing and free experimentation to make eyewear for as many people as possible in order for them to be able to see the beauty of the world.
In 2021 the brand reached a key milestone, beginning independent in-house production (Additive Scale) near Munich, enabling full control over every stage of manufacturing and, above all, over product quality. Another significant date is 2024 marking the start of the Zeiss cooperation through Zeiss Visufit 1000, which, by integrating You Mawo technology, allows the creation of bespoke frames paired with customised Zeiss lenses.
Ten years on, You Mawo chose to celebrate this important anniversary in the place where it all began, at the opti trade fair, with a stand retracing the key stages of its journey through the ‘Legacy Area.’ on that occasion, it also presented its new Formation collection, characterised by a silky surface finish and an innovative hinge. Not just a collection, but a reflection on the brand’s evolution over time. Johan Coetsee, Managing Director, explains: “We celebrated this 10-year milestone not just by looking back, but by launching ‘Formation,’ a concept that reflects our evolution. Just as geological layers form over time, our brand has grown layer by layer through the passion of our team and the continuous refinement of our processes.”
If the earliest models took their names from major mountain peaks such as Makalu, inspiration now stems from a diametrically opposite perspective: the 70% of the Earth hidden beneath water, including underwater volcanoes and elevations shaped by the smoothing power of the sea. “Formation represents our new definition of luxury: a smooth aesthetic with an exceptional feel that creates a new layer of comfort for the wearer,” adds Johan Coetsee.
Another key aspect of You Mawo’s collections is the use, from the outset, of 3D printing, a far from incidental choice. “Additive manufacturing is the path to reach our goal as it empowers us to create bespoke frames tailored to individual needs. The beauty of this technology is its flexibility: in our production it makes no difference whether we produce 100 identical frames or 100 completely unique, personalized ones.” The aim extends beyond achieving a specific aesthetic result, it also involves embracing an environmentally responsible commitment which aligns naturally with a brand that frequently looks to nature as its primary source
of inspiration. “Unlike traditional manufacturing in the eyewear industry, our process generates zero waste. It
is the most resource-efficient way to create a high-performance, lightweight product that is as sustainable as it
is perfectly fitted.” A contemporary vision that projects forward in time, looking to nature and to the future - always with courage.
