Chiaroscuro

Chromatic contrast

Material and chromatic contrasts define both sunglasses and optical frames, with chiaroscuro effects that illuminate the gaze, sometimes creating an air of mystery. Between light and shadow

Beyond their structural elements, eyewear increasingly incorporates light and shadow, producing a chiaroscuro effect that adds depth with three-dimensional, sculptural volumes. In this regard, Gobi Amsterdam (shown in the opening photo) drew inspiration from the 1980s for Lemmie, a semi-transparent unisex pair of sunglasses with fluid, soft lines, where a play of dark and light colours creates asymmetrical chromatic zones. On the other hand, Barton Perreira’s creative concept is rooted in the American architectural modernist movement, resulting in micro-architectures designed down to the finest detail, such as the BP40085I model in bicolour acetate: black highlights the browline and the upper part of the frame, while the tortoiseshell lightens and adds movement to the lower part.

Similarly, the tortoiseshell effect emerges through the skilful milling of acetate in Talla Eyewear's Soffuso model, which draws inspiration from chiaroscuro, blending light and shadow through sophisticated craftsmanship, material contrasts, and chromatic variations that bring to life models reflecting a journey along the boundary between light and shadow. For Tarian, a touch of lighter and amber hues on strategic points, such as the bridge, parts of the rims, and the temples, is enough to soften the sharp lines of the Buren optical frame, part of the Canvas collection. Jérémy Miklitarian, the creator of the brand, has always had a particular flair for mixing colours and selecting materials with an artistic eye—he is also a ceramicist with a workshop in the heart of Paris’s Marais district, where he blends his two passions.

Perfect colour pairings are also present in the intricate cut-out details of Caroline Abram’s Opus collection, including the Oana sunglasses model, made from acetate in a bold shape, available in black and tortoiseshell, with an original winged detail on the temples. For Romeo Gigli, colour takes on subtle shades, with chiaroscuro effects in neutral tones, contrasting with the strong, mask-like shape of the RGS.606X model, featuring a single Zeiss lens, worn during the Spring/Summer 2025 women’s runway show. Faded colours also feature in Look's new sunglasses models, which, thanks to the innovative technique of thermoforming, gain unique depth and three-dimensionality, enhanced by original fading effects, as seen in model 04656, focusing on brown tones—one of the key colours for the upcoming season. Between light and shadow, naturally.
