The equations behind minimalism

The pursuit of perfection in eyewear mirrors the rigorous elegance of mathematics. From Euler’s famed identity to contemporary frame design, simplicity arises from the harmonious equilibrium of materials, proportions and details. Brands translate this precision into minimalism that is timeless, expressive and unmistakably modern
The formula eiπ = −1, commonly attributed to Leonhard Euler, known as Euler's Identity, is regarded by many as the most elegant in mathematics: for its simplicity. It unites the two most renowned mathematical constants (e and π) with the two fundamental units of the real and complex number sets (1 and i). It is considered as captivating as it is mysterious, for even the most intricate calculations go on to simplify to a remarkably straightforward result. A conceptual digression that serves as a metaphor for understanding the complexity often underlying the creation of the purest forms of eyewear.
Translating into a small object the pursuit of impeccable balance between aesthetics, function, and identity comes strikingly close to the aesthetic criteria intrinsic to mathematics. A frame with essential profiles is the result of an equation of highly complex variables, yielding the simplest, most natural outcome. A synthesis of variables in equilibrium: material, ergonomics, proportions, colour. A synthesis that corresponds to a style both timeless and ubiquitous in eyewear: minimalism. Brands that choose to forgo redundancy and opulence, favouring austere design born of subtraction, rewrite their own version of this formula each season: working on proportions, details, and materials with a mathematical mindset imbued with visionary thought.
Some seek a balance between presence and lightness: a volume that asserts personality but is relieved through intelligent calculation. In launching the new Carbon Bold capsule collection (opening photo), Fleye Copenhagen’s design team stated, “We wanted to create something bold and audacious, something that radiates presence. Using fluid carbon allowed us to sculpt the eyewear in a way never attempted before. By employing such an expressive material, we achieved frames with surprising facets and remarkable depth, while maintaining carbon’s characteristic lightness. The facets catch the light at sharp angles, revealing the material’s complex depth.” The capsule collection propels carbon frames into an entirely unexplored dimension. The designs combine a radically new silhouette with refined minimalism, achieving a fresh equilibrium between material innovation and Nordic elegance.
Other brands, such as Kio Yamato, build a frame’s character from a detail: a sculpted bridge, an ergonomic terminal, a hinge conceived as a micro-precision mechanism. Small cues which, like constants in an equation, yield originally harmonious results. The Japanese brand conceives comfort as the purest form of luxury. “Titanium grants purity and balance. It possesses a quiet strength that is never burdensome. Beta titanium allows near-instinctive movement, flexing and returning with natural rhythm. We favour these materials because they enable the frame to behave as we believe a frame should: calm, light, assured. Hinges are where our craft becomes most personal; they are the inner language of the frame. The J hinge, shaped through multiple presses, produces a soft, almost human movement. The Ju Shi hinge, reinforced by dual resin washers, maintains stability over the years. The Falcon system follows the ear’s contour with extreme precision. These details are discreet, yet shape the entire experience of wearing the frame.”
Then there are brands like A. Society that deserve credit for delivering one of the coolest and most precious expressions of contemporary minimalism. They have just unveiled A. LAB – Silver & Gold, an experimental new capsule collection that marks a fresh chapter in the brand’s exploration of precious metals, form, and cultural references. Sterling silver and 18K gold-plated sterling silver are employed to unlock limitless possibilities in both material and design. The aesthetic language weaves in architectural elements while engaging in a deeper dialogue with the urban landscape, transforming city culture into wearable form. A formula that elevates minimalism into one of the most captivating expressive forms of tomorrow.
