The aviator, reimagined

Words Alessandra Albarello

21/01/2026

Never out of fashion, the aviator’s teardrop shape returns season after season, each time stronger than before, offering fresh aesthetic interpretations. Ready to embark on real and imaginary journeys

With its timeless teardrop silhouette, the aviator style has transcended eras and generations, becoming an aesthetic symbol of real and imagined travel, as well as of social and youth revolutions and a sense of belonging to specific groups. It therefore comes as no surprise that it is constantly reinterpreted by different brands, each adding a contemporary twist or a distinctive detail to make the design unique.

Francis de Lara, for example, transforms the aviator into a true piece of jewellery, exaggerating its volumes and ennobling it through the use of gold-plated titanium. Completing the FDL Aviator model (as seen in the opening image), produced in a limited edition of just 300 pieces, are refined details such as the intricate “Telato” finish, which recreates the texture of linen, a poetic teardrop set with a precious stone, and a wavy temple inlaid with either a natural diamond or a sapphire.

Equally original and sculptural is Bottega Veneta’s interpretation, in which the temple tips are replaced by emblematic drops, becoming a strong decorative feature of the face in the BV1437 bicolour metal model. The GG2064S by Gucci, also crafted in metal with the classic double bridge, is immediately recognisable thanks to the bamboo detail on the bridge — a reference to the brand’s pioneering use of this natural material, particularly in accessories such as the iconic Bamboo 1947 bag.

Remaining faithful to the original aviator structure, Longchamp likewise asserts its identity through the bamboo motif on the bridge: in the Roseau metal model, it recalls the signature clasp of one of the French maison’s handbag lines. True to the brand’s bold and assertive aesthetic, Dsquared2’s men’s D2 0196/S sunglasses draw inspiration from the 1970s, a decade very much back in fashion this year. Made from acetate, they feature an oversized teardrop shape, enhanced by striking metal inserts on the bridge and temples that emphasise their strong identity.

The teardrop shape once again takes centre stage on the feminine face with the Reuber optical frame by Kaleos, designed for a woman who moves through the world with confidence, curiosity and elegance, embracing the unexpected with enthusiasm. Crafted in acetate, it is both delicate and assertive, and is available in a refined, essential colour palette of five shades, ranging from neutral and semi-transparent tones to deeper, darker hues.

And so, the journey continues.
