Xavier Garcia tells us about Sapiens which, as the name suggests, is a return to the origins of mankind. It is a project of constantly evolving research...

Could you describe your new eyewear adventure: Sapiens?
Sapiens is not only a new collection but a project that I have been working on for several years now. for this reason, it will be presented as a new brand, having nothing to do with the Xavier garcia eyewear collection. The concept behind Sapiens is of going back to the origins and reflecting on the history of human evolution, through design. This collection is inspired by research that is in constant development and how it reflects our desire to continuously evolve. This is a creative exercise, challenging conventional thinking in the market and the trends, to create something significant and unique.

How did it all start?
Some years ago, I became fascinated with reading palaeontology books - the history of human evolution, the origins of humankind and the research methodologies palaeontologists use to reconstruct the past. I understood that each time a scientist finds a fossil bone, they study its dimensions and morphology to infer and define its place in the tree of human evolution. I was fascinated by the idea that with the study of the shape of a single piece of bone, they can extract so much information about our origins, history and customs. Then I asked myself some questions: "What happens with the orbital spaces in the skulls? have their shapes changed over time? Can they determine the kind of specimen they belong to? Are orbital shapes in skulls different from Australopithecus to Neanderthals, and from Homo Erectus to Homo Habilis? Are orbital shapes on mankind today (Homo Sapiens) similar or different, independent of their origins?"

Tell us a bit about your creative and research process...
These questions served as the starting point for formal research on the specimens that belong to our direct line of evolution: Australopithecus Afarensis, Australopithecus Africanus, Homo Habilis, Homo Erectus, Homo Neanderthal, Homo Heidelbergensis... up to Homo Sapiens. I began working from the shapes of their skulls, from their orbital spaces, and the volumes and forms of the traces we have from them. Based on this research, I started a completely free design exercise which over time has evolved into a new collection. In that sense, Sapiens consists of an ongoing creative exercise that expands and transforms research into acquirable objects.

Why is this new launch of Sapiens so important to you?
When I started the project, I felt saturated with the optical market’s trends. I needed to return to the roots. The focus of Sapiens is not on selling products but on recovering history; researching, and engaging with the audience from a human-centred approach. Sapiens pieces are worn to express oneself, becoming more than just a product. We think of Sapiens as an invitation to explore the boundaries of the present and reconnect with the past beyond the confines of trends and market demands.

Light, colour, the main use of acetate... What are the elements that make your design unique?
In the Sapiens collection you will find bold and unique shapes sculpted from acetate. These shapes are
based on skulls with very distinctive facial features, and this influence is reflected in the frame designs. The colour palette also corresponds to the study; you will find natural and earthy tones that complement and highlight the shapes of the acetate. In fact, the colour palette is inspired by cave paintings from the same settlement where some of the skulls were found. overall, the frames have several subtle details that maintain an elegant and distinctive design.

What about your expectations?
I am having a lot of fun studying and playing with the shapes of our ancestors, and I hope that it is interesting for the public too. We are now presenting the first drop of the collection. We expect this initial release to set the baseline for what is to come. As I mentioned, the collection is based on ongoing research, which makes the project a continuous one. I am looking forward to continuing to design from this perspective; it allows us to be freer in shapes and outcomes. We expect to design more than eyewear in the future and follow a more creative line of thought.
