A sharp, decisive line that instantly conveys a contemporary mood. A precise, architectural, uncompromising cut that captures the spirit of the times. Flat-top glasses are therefore among the must-haves of the coming season
A bold statement of style, flat-top glasses express a contemporary mood through a compact silhouette and clean, exact lines that define essential architectural outlines. A synthesis of form and function, many brands also draw inspiration from iconic shapes of the past, particularly from the 1980s and 1990s. For Alaïa, it is above all a question of harmonies and contrasts, creating a strong, daring impact that transforms the maison’s codes into a powerful, distinctive language with no compromises. The AA00104S model, in acetate, features sculpted profiles of varying thicknesses that reinforce its sharp geometry, softened by chamfered edges.
Finishes become fundamental in making the shapes less severe while preserving their rigorous appearance. This is what Kaleos calls “Beautiful shapes”: a blend of intuition and experimentation with bold shifts in direction. The acetate Bender model (as seen in the opening image) has a form that is both essential and complex, thanks to the modulation of thicknesses that lend depth, movement and light to the frame. Valentino, meanwhile, relies on the maison’s signature aesthetic vocabulary with the women’s VG0005S model, characterised by a rectangular shape and wide temples, also available in a striped version. And, of course, within the colour palette, the legendary Valentino red could not be missing.
Flat-top styling also features at Marc Jacobs, who with the acetate Marc 904/S model focuses on substantial volumes and sharp cuts, while the iconic double metal trim stands out on the front as both a decorative element and a recognisable symbol of the brand’s identity. Decidedly feminine, the VB 1004/S model by Victoria Beckham is aimed at a confident, dynamic woman, where the flat-top is softened by the rounded shape of the lower part of the rims. The tone-on-tone colour of the gradient lenses also plays a key role in lightening the overall frame, in a strategic interplay of subtle balances.
Equally balanced are the lines of the unisex MOS 209/S model by Moschino from the Metal line, firmly on trend. Metal is used to create a geometric construction which, while slim and lightweight, conveys character and personality. It is available in gold with black tips and grey gradient lenses, matt gold with red/black tips and brown lenses, and silver with brown tips and blue gradient lenses. Models which, through the strength of a single detail, capture and fully express the zeitgeist — the spirit of our time.
