Dark Allure

Black frames and dark lenses: protection from the sun—and from prying eyes. The timeless appeal of a colour that is absolute, powerful and enigmatic

An exchange of glances can evoke countless emotions. Our eyes are among the most vulnerable, expressive and instantly recognisable parts of who we are. They often reveal what words cannot—or choose not to—say: a sleepless night, a passing melancholy, or a fleeting thought that momentarily carries the mind elsewhere.

It is no coincidence, then, that celebrities and private individuals alike have long favoured black-framed sunglasses with dark lenses as a discreet form of concealment. They offer anonymity, discourage unwanted attention and help safeguard the most private sphere of one's life. Yet black owes its enduring popularity to more than discretion alone. Timeless, essential and uncompromising, it remains an ever-present colour across fashion and eyewear collections alike. And, naturally, there is its most practical virtue: dependable protection from the sun.

For Khaite x Oliver Peoples (pictured in the opening image), this philosophy is expressed through the cat-eye 1963C frame, crafted from acetate and fitted with bio-polyamide lenses. Vintage inspiration is reimagined as a contemporary luxury accessory, perfectly reflecting the refined yet progressive aesthetic of Khaite, the label founded by Catherine Holstein.

The Grâce frame from Ahlem's Voyager Collection, meanwhile, draws inspiration from founder and designer Ahlem Manai-Platt's recent journey through Hokkaido. Immersed in unfamiliar landscapes and shifting perspectives, all permeated by an extraordinary sense of stillness, she discovered a renewed creative viewpoint. The result is two limited-edition styles—Comédie and Grâce—conceived for the modern woman traveller and produced in editions of just 350 pieces per colour.

At first glance, Balenciaga's Standard appears reassuringly classic. Its character, however, lies in the finer details: softly bevelled corners, straight temples engraved with the Balenciaga name, vintage-inspired front rivets and the House's signature logo adorning the temple tips. Together, these elements convey the unmistakable couture sensibility of the maison founded by Cristóbal Balenciaga in 1937, now under the creative direction of Pierpaolo Piccioli.

Also born from the world of fashion is Pomandère's Bitter, distinguished by its quiet sophistication. Its timeless, compact silhouette projects confidence while remaining softened through carefully balanced curves and refined proportions. Crafted from biodegradable bio-based M49 acetate, it also embodies the brand's commitment to responsible design.

Few accessories have become as closely associated with public personas as black-framed sunglasses. Aristotle Onassis remains one of their most iconic wearers. TBD Eyewear's gender-neutral Ari, produced in a limited edition as part of the Bottega collection, pays tribute to his unmistakable style. The collection's name reflects an unwavering commitment to detail, born from the meeting of artisanal craftsmanship, technological innovation and contemporary vision. Hallmark features include a keyhole bridge, generously proportioned ergonomic temples, bespoke rivets and an internal diamond-pattern core.

The L.G.R. x Alex Rivière Studio capsule collection is the result of a collaboration between L.G.R. and Spanish designer Alex Rivière. Among its three styles is Meknes, a clean, architectural design featuring a grooved metal front paired with acetate temples. Finished entirely in black, each frame is handcrafted by the brand's master artisans and fitted with mineral glass lenses providing 100% protection against both UV and infrared radiation.

Spanish fashion house Loewe, meanwhile, opts for a bolder interpretation with the Triangle Slim LW40185I. Crafted from acetate, its distinctive triangular silhouette proves that while the aim may be to remain incognito, blending into the crowd is never part of the plan.
