Red is the colour that lights up the trendiest glasses of the moment. Presented as part of a limited edition or interpreted by famous models and fashion icons, it gives each accessory personality and energy. And a touch of pop.
Ripped jeans, a marinière and sunglasses with a red frame… The iconography of the legend that is Kurt Cobain continues to make us dream of that free-spirited, summery outfit that was from so many years ago but is still so contemporary. It was the 90s but his look was inspired by the 60s, just like the glasses by Danielle Rattray (in the opening photo), who has translated her love for pop culture into the Teddy model, citing the lines and aesthetic codes of that time through the use of (Italian) acetate with a thickness of 8.0mm. The independent women's clothing and accessories brand based in Scotland has always stayed true to the colour red, which has become a symbol of the audacity of its style and ethos. Included in the category of “Splendour Colours” by Rudolf Steiner, the strength of red in glasses is modulated through its intensity and shape. It can even go as far as “blazing”, like in the eccentric version of Spike by Balenciaga. A veritable work of sculpture, the mod. BB0255S certainly does not go unnoticed and, moreover, it has a green soul, being made with bio-based injections using 65% organic material. Another example of an unusual shape is Alain Mikli's A05072 model, which draws on the brand's archives, taking up the jagged perimeter of a leaf. The chromatic contrast of the thick red profiles with the dark acetate in the front and the virtuosity of the workmanship further enhance the originality of these limited edition sunglasses.
The glamorous glasses by Delarge, a young Spanish artisanal brand created on the initiative of influencer Blanca Miró and her friend Olivia Álvarez, focus on the geometry of the square rims of the Misquare model, while expertly blurring corners and edges to soften its lines. Red is absolute colour that makes no compromises and evokes passion, sunshine, energy and positivity, so much so that Lapima has baptised “Calor” with a special and exclusive shade inspired by “jangadas”, typical Brazilian boats. Only 600 pieces have been made of the vibrant “Calor” version of the acetate Ruth prescription frames, a contemporary interpretation of reading glasses.
A full and textured red, or a translucent red filtered by the light? The choice becomes difficult when faced with alternatives such as the irresistible and courageous LuckyDior male model by Dior, which set up an aesthetic encounter between Californian pop culture and the elegance of Parisian Haute Couture. First unveiled in Los Angeles at Kim Jones' Spring 2023 Pret-à-porter fashion show, it was designed in collaboration with emerging designer Eli Russell of the ERL brand and bears the Dior x ERL logo on the temple. Translucent red can also be found in the model that Oliver Peoples has designed together with Khaite, a company founded by Catherine Holstein that is venturing into the world of eyewear for the first time. It is taking these first steps with the Oliver Peoples brand, with whom it shares a love for vintage references in a contemporary key, as well as an attention to detail that is evident above all through the temples, where a double embedding process exposes custom corewire inspired by the streamlined hardware of Khaite handbags. The limited edition Khaite x Oliver Peoples collection debuted in New York on 12 February at the Khaite F/W 2023 fashion show and features three models, including the 1971C, characterised by a multifaceted geometric shape. The absolute star of the advertising campaign that accompanied the launch of the collection is the internationally renowned model and muse Steinberg, immortalised in the shots by photographer Hanna Tveite. Because we understand each other through myths. Perfectly.
