Enhancing the face

Words Alessandra Albarello

A strong, angular or sinuous line defines glasses that then release the lenses at the top, even with clean cuts. Lightness and depth, sculptural volumes, contrasts and new architectures thus enhance the face and the look

Simply perfect. In the 60s, the iconic model Veruschka is portrayed wearing an iridescent Emilio Pucci shirt knotted under her breasts and blue-framed half-moon glasses... And so a continuous line at the bottom of the glasses becomes an essential and pure graphic symbol that characterises and strengthens semi-rimless models. The lens is unleashed in an interplay of balances, harmonies and even contrasts, but there are different variations on the same theme. For example, in the unisex model Nettuno (in the opening photo) by T Henri (in which the 'T' stands for Tyler, the name of the founder), an exclusive brand of glasses made only in a limited edition, the lens is surrounded by a thin circle in engraved titanium and 18k gold plating which, at the top of the frame, emerges luminous from the Japanese acetate modulated in different thicknesses. Each piece is handcrafted in no less than 250 steps and everything is taken care of down to the smallest detail, starting with the enamelled logo that represents a trident up to the Zeiss gradient lenses in CR39. Only 100 pieces per colour were made of the Nettuno model, which become the identifying symbol of a certain way of understanding life, a style that values uniqueness, luxury, quality and excellence.

Uniqueness is also the key word for the glasses of Anna-Karin Karlsson, which have been worn by international stars such as the legendary Harry Styles, who in the video "Music for a sushi restaurant" wears the Half Moon model, which is as original and luxurious as the Crystal Meringue, made from Japanese titanium, Swarovski crystals, handmade finishes and lenses characterised by a particular cut (precisely akin to a meringue). Meanwhile, you almost become part of a legend (and a fairy tale) with Frida's Shades glasses, which are freely inspired by the works of the Mexican artist Frida Kahlo, as is the entire Spring/Summer 2024 collection of the high fashion brand Sirivannavari, created in 2005 by the Thai princess Sirivannavari Nariratana Rajakanya, also influenced by her grandmother, the elegant queen Sirikit, who has always been passionate about Thai fashion and fabrics. A unique sculptural model made from multicoloured acetate and metal with polarised lenses, available in four different colour variations.

The mod. AA0076S by Alaïa is contemporary and daring: a real design accessory with volumes, thicknesses, colours and finishes that reproduce the strong and incisive language of the maison, as do the tips of the wide temples that recall the initial A, a hallmark of Alaïa bags. From small and narrow shapes, we move on to the oversized dimensions of the Fendi's FE40136I model in black acetate with square lines and smoke lenses defined by a straight, clean cut at the top. It is part of the Fendi Way Collection and is characterised by the ends with the maison's metal logo, the famous F, recognisable everywhere. The very light, sports-inspired Gucci sunglasses are also oversized, with a black frame that continues through to the temples with a fluid and flowing line, freeing the wide single lens that, available in three different colours, becomes the undisputed star of the mod. GG1650S. In fact, a simple, almost architectural line can enhance the distinctiveness of a face and accentuate a look. It must be tried to be believed.
